I wanted to create this painting as I abruptly stopped my Awakening series a few years ago (Awakening was my debut collection of women in water and is what I’m most known for).
Somehow at the time, I felt like I wanted my art to be ‘more like everyone elses’ - I wanted it to be ‘cool’ and ‘modern’ and ‘minimal’. And so I spent a long time trying to work out how I could do that.
But actually, what I have realised is that my Art isn’t meant to look like someone else’s (just like theirs won’t look like mine).
I feel like I’ve learned a lot since I made that abrupt exit from Awakening - and I’ve come to value my own ideas a lot more. The hardest thing when creating Art is comparing yourself to what other people are doing..
Dive came about because I wanted to make a return to my old style of painting in a BIG way (my biggest piece yet). I wanted to go all in - to dive in at the deep end so to speak.
I fell in love with painting this piece immediately, and she got more and more beautiful during the process.
I asked on my stories what I should call her and ‘Dive’ stood out. It reflects my new attitude to painting (and to life) - if I want to do something, I’m going all in.
A friend also mentioned the song Dive by Olivia Dean - which I’m also in love with, so that was also such a lovely harmony she just had to be called Dive.
